Top things to do in Cologne
Most of Cologne’s highlights cluster around the cathedral and the Rhine, so the centre is easy to explore on foot.
- Cologne Cathedral — A UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece of Gothic architecture; climb the south tower for sweeping views over the city and river.
- Hohenzollern Bridge — The railway bridge across the Rhine, covered in thousands of padlocks left by couples, with classic views of the cathedral.
- Old Town and Rhine promenade — Narrow lanes, colourful gabled houses and traditional brewhouses lead down to a riverside walk lined with cafés.
- Museum Ludwig — A major collection of modern art beside the cathedral, known for its Pop Art and works by Picasso.
- Chocolate Museum — A popular riverside museum telling the story of cocoa and chocolate, with tastings along the way.
- Romano-Germanic Museum — Remarkable finds from Roman Cologne, including a celebrated Dionysus mosaic.
- Rheinpark and the cable car — A large park on the east bank, linked across the river by a cable car in the warmer months.
Best time to visit Cologne
May to September is the most pleasant time to visit, with mild to warm weather for riverside walks, beer gardens and boat trips on the Rhine. July and August are the warmest months and the busiest for tourism, while spring and early autumn are comfortable and a little quieter.
Cologne’s Carnival is one of the largest in Europe. The season officially opens on 11 November, but the street celebrations peak in the days before Lent, usually in February, with costumes, parades and parties across the city. Accommodation books up quickly at this time.
Winter is cool, grey and often damp, but from late November until just before Christmas several atmospheric Christmas markets fill the squares, including one in the shadow of the cathedral. Large trade fairs held in the city throughout the year can also make hotels busier, so it is worth checking event calendars and booking ahead.
Getting from the airport
Cologne Bonn Airport lies around 15 kilometres south-east of Cologne city centre and also serves the nearby city of Bonn. Its railway station is located beneath the terminals.
- Train — S-Bahn and regional trains run frequently from the airport station to Cologne main station, beside the cathedral, in around 15 to 20 minutes.
- Bus — Express buses connect the airport with Bonn and surrounding areas; for central Cologne, the train is usually quicker.
- Taxi — Taxis wait outside the terminals. The drive to central Cologne usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Train tickets can be bought from machines at the airport station. Make sure your ticket covers the right zone for your destination before boarding. If you are heading to Bonn instead, trains and express buses also link the airport with the city in around 20 to 30 minutes.
Where to stay
Cologne is compact and well served by trams, S-Bahn and buses, so most areas are a short ride from the cathedral and the main station.
- Altstadt (Old Town) — Best for first-time visitors who want the cathedral, museums, brewhouses and the Rhine promenade on the doorstep.
- Belgian Quarter — A stylish area west of the centre with boutiques, cafés and bars, suited to younger travellers and food lovers.
- Ehrenfeld — A creative, multicultural district with street art and nightlife, good for those wanting a local feel.
- Deutz — On the east bank, close to the trade fair grounds, with classic views back across the river to the cathedral.
- Südstadt — A relaxed residential neighbourhood with traditional pubs and riverside parks, popular with families and longer stays.
Travel tips
- Getting around — Trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and buses share one ticketing system. Validate paper tickets before travelling, as inspectors make random checks and fines apply.
- Kölsch culture — Local Kölsch beer is served in small glasses, and waiters keep bringing fresh ones until you place your beer mat on top of the glass.
- Payment — Cards are widely accepted, but some smaller bakeries, kiosks and traditional pubs prefer cash, so carry some euros.
- Tipping — Service is included, but rounding up or adding around 5 to 10 percent for good service in restaurants is customary.
- Sundays — Most shops close on Sundays and public holidays, while restaurants, museums and station shops generally stay open.
- Entry requirements — Visa and entry rules depend on your nationality. Check the latest requirements with official sources before you travel.
