Erzurum Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Erzurum is a high-altitude city in eastern Türkiye, one of the country’s coldest and most historic. It is known for magnificent Seljuk and Ottoman monuments, the ski resort of Palandöken right above town, the spit-roasted cağ kebabı and jet-black Oltu stone jewellery. Top things to do in Erzurum

Erzurum’s historic centre is compact, with major monuments a short walk apart and mountains on the doorstep.

  • Double Minaret Madrasa (Çifte Minareli Medrese) — The city’s emblem, a Seljuk-era theological school with twin fluted minarets.
  • Yakutiye Madrasa — A 14th-century madrasa with a richly carved portal, now housing a museum of Turkish-Islamic arts.
  • Three Tombs (Üç Kümbetler) — A group of conical-roofed medieval tombs near the old centre.
  • Erzurum Castle — Hilltop fortifications with views across the city and plain.
  • Palandöken — A major ski resort just south of the city, known for long runs and reliable snow.
  • Taşhan bazaar — A historic stone han where artisans craft and sell Oltu stone jewellery.
  • Cağ kebabı — Try the city’s signature horizontal spit-roasted lamb, served on skewers.

Best time to visit Erzurum

Erzurum sits at almost 1,900 metres and has a harsh continental climate: long, very cold winters with heavy snow and short, warm, sunny summers. June to September is the most comfortable time for sightseeing and trips into the surrounding countryside, such as Tortum Waterfall.

December to March is ski season on Palandöken, with excellent snow cover. Temperatures in winter can fall far below freezing, so proper winter clothing is essential. Spring and autumn are short and changeable.

Getting from the airport

Erzurum Airport lies north-west of the city, roughly 10 km from the centre, so the drive is short. Most international travellers connect through Istanbul or Ankara.

Airport shuttle buses usually run in connection with flights, and taxis are available outside the terminal. Many Palandöken ski hotels can arrange transfers, and car hire is available for exploring the region.

Where to stay

Choose between the historic centre and the ski slopes, depending on your season.

  • City centre (Cumhuriyet Avenue area) — Ideal for sightseeing, close to the madrasas, castle and restaurants.
  • Palandöken ski area — Ski-in, ski-out hotels for winter sports enthusiasts.
  • Yakutiye district — Modern hotels and shopping, suited to business travellers.

Travel tips

  • Money: Cards are widely accepted; carry some lira for the bazaar and small eateries.
  • Getting around: The historic centre is walkable; taxis and buses connect it with Palandöken.
  • Cold weather: In winter, pack thermal layers, a warm hat and boots with good grip for icy pavements.
  • Altitude: At high elevation, the sun is strong even in winter; use sunscreen and drink plenty of water.
  • Etiquette: Erzurum is conservative; dress modestly, particularly when visiting mosques.
