Kunming

Kunming is a relaxed city with parks, temples and markets, and a springboard for some of Yunnan’s most striking landscapes.

  • Stone Forest (Shilin) — Towering limestone pillars south-east of the city, part of the UNESCO-listed South China Karst.
  • Dian Lake — A large plateau lake on the city’s edge, ideal for lakeside walks and cycling.
  • Western Hills and Dragon Gate — Cliff-side paths and temples with panoramic views over Dian Lake.
  • Green Lake Park (Cuihu) — A central park of willows and pavilions, famous for visiting black-headed gulls in winter.
  • Yuantong Temple — One of the city’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples.
  • Yunnan Nationalities Village — Displays of the architecture, music and customs of Yunnan’s many ethnic groups.
  • Crossing-the-bridge noodles — Try Yunnan’s signature rice noodle dish, along with local mushrooms and flower cakes.

Kunming’s altitude of around 1,900 metres gives it one of China’s mildest climates, with few very hot or very cold days. The rainy season generally runs from about June to October, while winter and spring are dry and sunny, though nights can be chilly.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Winter is also pleasant for city sightseeing, and it is when the gulls gather at Green Lake. The sun is strong at altitude year-round, so bring sun protection even on cool days.

Kunming Changshui International Airport lies roughly 25 km north-east of the city centre. It is a large, modern airport and a major hub for south-west China.

A metro line connects the airport with the city’s rail network, and is the most predictable option. Taxis queue at official ranks outside arrivals, and ride-hailing apps are widely used. Airport buses also run to various city districts. Allow extra time by road at peak hours.

Staying centrally puts you close to parks, restaurants and metro connections.

  • Wuhua (Green Lake area) — Leafy and central, near Green Lake, Yuantong Temple and cafés; ideal for first-time visitors.
  • Dongfeng Square and Nanping Street — The commercial heart, with shopping and easy transport links.
  • Guandu — South-east of the centre, with modern hotels and the old Guandu Ancient Town.
  • Dianchi lakeside — Resort-style hotels near the lake and the Western Hills, good for a relaxed stay.

  • Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the main payment methods; set them up with an international card beforehand and carry some cash.
  • Getting around: The metro, taxis and ride-hailing are convenient; for the Stone Forest, use a train, organised tour or private car.
  • Altitude: At around 1,900 metres, the sun is strong and some people tire more quickly; drink plenty of water.
  • Connectivity: Some international apps and websites may not work in mainland China; arrange connectivity and offline maps before arrival.
  • Language: English is limited outside hotels, so use a translation app and carry your hotel address in Chinese.
