Top things to do in Phuket

Phuket's west coast is lined with beaches, while the old town and island-hopping piers lie to the east and south.

  • Patong Beach — The island's busiest beach, with water sports by day and famous nightlife around Bangla Road.
  • Kata and Karon — Broad sandy bays with a more relaxed feel, popular with families.
  • Old Phuket Town — Streets of pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés, shrines and weekend walking markets.
  • Big Buddha — A huge white marble statue on a hilltop, with views over the south of the island.
  • Phang Nga Bay — Limestone karsts rising from emerald water, explored by boat or sea kayak.

  • Promthep Cape — The island's southern tip, one of the best places to watch the sunset.

Best time to visit Phuket

Phuket is warm all year. The dry season from November to April brings sunny days, calm seas and the best conditions for swimming, snorkelling and boat trips, with December to February the busiest period.

From about May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and rougher seas on the west coast, when some beaches fly red flags and certain boat trips may be cancelled. It is also quieter and greener. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, a long-established event rooted in the island's Chinese community, is held around October.

Getting from the airport

Phuket International Airport is in the north of the island. Phuket Town is roughly 30 to 45 minutes away by road, and the main west-coast beaches such as Patong, Kata and Karon usually take around an hour, depending on traffic.

Taxis are available from the official counters in arrivals, and ride-hailing apps, shared minivans and hotel transfers are all common. An airport bus serves Phuket Town and some beach areas. Many visitors pre-book a transfer, especially when arriving late at night.

Where to stay

Where you stay in Phuket shapes your holiday, from party beaches to secluded bays and heritage streets.

  • Patong — Lively and central on the west coast, suited to nightlife lovers and first-time visitors.
  • Kata and Karon — Relaxed beaches with a good choice of hotels, ideal for families and couples.
  • Kamala and Bang Tao — Quieter northern beaches with resorts and villas, great for a calmer stay.
  • Old Phuket Town — Heritage guesthouses and local food, perfect for culture-focused travellers.

Travel tips

  • Money: Cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants; keep cash for markets, street food and small shops.
  • Getting around: Taxis, tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps are common; agree fares in advance if there is no meter.
  • Sea safety: Always respect red flags, as strong currents can occur on west-coast beaches in the monsoon season.

  • Etiquette: Cover up away from the beach and at temples, and show respect for the Thai monarchy.
