Best time to visit Cancún
Cancún is warm all year. The dry season, from about December to April, is the most popular time to visit, with sunny skies, lower humidity and pleasant sea conditions; it is also the busiest and most in-demand period, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
From May to November it is hotter and more humid, with frequent short, heavy showers. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk usually between August and October, so consider travel insurance and monitor forecasts. Sargassum seaweed can affect some beaches, typically in the warmer months, and conditions vary from year to year.
Getting from the airport
Cancún International Airport lies about 15–20 km south of downtown Cancún and a similar distance from much of the Hotel Zone, depending on your hotel’s location. It is one of Mexico’s busiest airports, with several terminals.
ADO buses run from the terminals to downtown Cancún and to Playa del Carmen. Authorised airport taxis and pre-booked shuttles are widely used and convenient for the Hotel Zone and Riviera Maya. Many resorts include transfers. Use only official transport services inside the terminal.
Where to stay
Choose between resort beaches, local city life or quieter coastal areas.
- Hotel Zone — Beachfront resorts, restaurants and nightlife along the Caribbean; ideal for classic beach holidays.
- Downtown (El Centro) — More local and budget-friendly, with markets and authentic eateries.
- Costa Mujeres and Puerto Juárez — Quieter resort areas north of the city, near the ferries to Isla Mujeres.
- Riviera Maya — Towns such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum, further south along the coast.
