Best time to visit Chicago
Chicago has four very distinct seasons. Late spring through early autumn, from May to October, is the best time to visit, with warm weather, lake breezes, beaches, rooftop bars and a busy calendar of outdoor festivals, especially in summer.
September and October are often crisp and sunny, with fewer crowds. Winters are long and very cold, with snow and icy winds off the lake, though the city stays lively with holiday lights, markets and indoor attractions. Pack warm layers for any trip between November and March.
Getting from the airport
O'Hare International Airport is about 27 kilometres north-west of downtown Chicago. By road the journey usually takes 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on traffic.
The CTA Blue Line train runs around the clock from O'Hare directly into the Loop, often the most reliable option at busy times. Taxis and ride-hailing pick-ups are available at the terminals, and shared shuttles serve many hotels. Chicago also has a second airport, Midway, on the south-west side of the city, so check which one your ticket shows.
Where to stay
Most visitors stay close to downtown, where the 'L' trains and buses make getting around straightforward.
- The Loop — Central for museums, theatres and Millennium Park, ideal for first-time visitors.
- River North and the Magnificent Mile — Shopping, dining and nightlife, suited to most travellers.
- West Loop — A former warehouse district famous for its restaurants, perfect for food lovers.
- Lincoln Park — Leafy and residential, near the zoo and lakefront, great for a relaxed stay.
