Ghardaïa Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Ghardaïa is the main city of the M’zab Valley, on the northern edge of the Algerian Sahara about 600 km south of Algiers. Its five fortified hilltop towns, built by the Mozabite community around a thousand years ago, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site admired for its harmonious desert architecture. Book flights to Ghardaïa with RwandAir and partner airlines.

The M’zab Valley’s five ksour each crown a hill, with a mosque minaret at the top and houses cascading down the slopes.

  • Ghardaïa old town — Climb through lanes of pastel-coloured houses to the mosque and explore the arcaded market square below.
  • Beni Isguen — The most traditional of the towns, visited with a local guide, known for its evening auction market.
  • El Atteuf — The oldest ksar of the valley, home to the simple, sculptural Sidi Brahim mosque.
  • Melika and Bou Noura — Smaller hilltop ksour with fine views across the valley.
  • Palm groves — Shaded gardens with ingenious traditional systems for sharing floodwater and wells.
  • Carpets and crafts — The region is known for woven rugs and handicrafts sold in its markets.

Ghardaïa has a hot desert climate with scant rainfall. Summers are very hot, with afternoon temperatures frequently above 40°C, while winters are mild by day and chilly at night.

The most comfortable time to visit is from October to April, when clear skies and moderate temperatures make walking through the ksour and palm groves a pleasure. Spring can bring sand-laden winds, and early mornings in winter are cold, so bring a warm layer.

Ghardaïa Noumérat – Moufdi Zakaria Airport is located south of the city, a drive of around half an hour across the desert plateau. It mainly serves domestic flights, and there is no rail link.

Taxis wait outside the terminal, and hotels and local tour agencies regularly arrange airport transfers, which is often the easiest option. If the taxi has no meter, agree the fare before departure. Once in the valley, the ksour are close together and easy to visit by taxi or with a guide.

Most visitors stay in Ghardaïa itself, within easy reach of all five ksour.

  • Ghardaïa centre — Near the market square and old town; convenient for first-time visitors.
  • Palm grove area — Guesthouses and hotels among the gardens offer a quieter, greener setting.
  • Main road towards Beni Isguen — Practical for travellers with a car or driver exploring the whole valley.

  • Money: Carry cash in dinars and exchange through official channels; cards are rarely accepted.
  • Guides: Visits to Beni Isguen and some other ksour are made with an authorised local guide.
  • Etiquette: Dress very modestly, respect local rules, and never photograph residents, especially women, without permission.
  • Health: Protect yourself from sun and heat, and carry water when walking the hillside lanes.
  • Language: Arabic and Mozabite are spoken; French is widely understood.
