Giza Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Giza lies on the west bank of the Nile, part of Greater Cairo in northern Egypt. It is home to the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx, the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, as well as the Grand Egyptian Museum, with Saqqara, Dahshur and central Cairo all close by. Top things to do in Giza

Giza is the gateway to some of the most famous monuments on Earth.

  • Pyramids of Giza — The Great Pyramid of Khufu and the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Great Sphinx — The iconic limestone statue with a lion’s body and a human head, guarding the plateau.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum — A vast modern museum near the pyramids, displaying Tutankhamun’s treasures and thousands of ancient artefacts.
  • Panoramic viewpoint — A desert viewpoint on the plateau offering classic photos of all the pyramids together.
  • Saqqara — The Step Pyramid of Djoser and decorated tombs, a short drive south.
  • Dahshur — Home to the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, usually quieter than Giza.
  • Camel or horse rides — A traditional way to see the pyramids against the desert; agree terms clearly before setting off.

Best time to visit Giza

Giza has a hot desert climate with very little rain. October to April is the best time to visit, with warm, sunny days and cooler evenings that make exploring the pyramids and desert sites far more comfortable. December to February is the busiest season, so arrive early to enjoy the plateau with fewer crowds.

From May to September temperatures can be very high, so plan visits for early morning or late afternoon, and carry water and sun protection. Spring can bring dusty khamsin winds. During Ramadan, opening hours at some sites and businesses may change, though major attractions remain open.

Getting from the airport

Sphinx International Airport lies on the desert edge west of Greater Cairo, closer to Giza and the pyramids than Cairo International Airport. The drive to the pyramids area and the Grand Egyptian Museum typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Taxis are available, and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem operate in Greater Cairo, offering a convenient way to agree the fare upfront. Many hotels and tour operators arrange airport transfers. Many travellers to Giza also arrive via Cairo International Airport, east of the city, which is further away.

Where to stay

Where you stay depends on whether you want pyramid views or easy access to Cairo.

  • Pyramids area — Hotels and guesthouses near the plateau, some with views of the pyramids; ideal for early visits.
  • Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October — Modern suburbs with newer hotels and malls, convenient for Sphinx Airport.
  • Dokki and Mohandessin — Lively districts closer to the Nile and central Cairo.
  • Zamalek and Downtown Cairo — Across the river, with restaurants, culture and museums; good for combining Cairo and Giza.

Travel tips

  • Money: Cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, but carry Egyptian pounds in small notes for tips, taxis and markets.
  • Getting around: Ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to travel; traffic in Greater Cairo is often heavy.
  • At the pyramids: Use licensed guides, agree prices for rides clearly and politely decline unwanted offers.
  • Dress: Light, modest clothing is best; cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques.
  • Sun: Bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, as there is little shade on the plateau.
