Kasane Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Kasane is a small riverside town in Botswana’s far north-east, on the Chobe River near where four countries almost meet. It is the gateway to Chobe National Park, famous for its huge elephant herds, and lies within easy reach of Victoria Falls. Book flights to Kasane with RwandAir and partner airlines.

Kasane offers some of Africa’s most accessible and rewarding wildlife viewing.

  • Chobe National Park — Game drives along the Chobe riverfront reveal elephants, buffalo, lions, giraffes and many antelope species.
  • Chobe River cruises — Boat trips, especially at sunset, bring you close to elephants drinking and swimming, hippos, crocodiles and abundant birds.
  • Photographic boat safaris — Specialised boats offer low-angle views for wildlife photographers.
  • Victoria Falls day trips — The falls are a short drive away across the border in Zimbabwe or Zambia.
  • Kazungula Bridge — A modern bridge across the Zambezi to Zambia, near the meeting point of four countries.
  • Kasane Forest Reserve — Woodland on the town’s edge with birdlife and quieter landscapes.

Kasane has a hot, semi-arid climate with a summer rainy season from about November to March, when the bush turns green, many animals give birth and migratory birds arrive. Winter, from May to August, is dry and sunny with mild days and cool nights, and September and October are very hot.

May to October is the best time for game viewing. As water sources inland dry up, huge numbers of elephants and other animals gather along the Chobe River, making boat cruises and riverfront game drives especially spectacular towards the end of the dry season.

Kasane Airport lies just outside the town, a few minutes’ drive from the main lodges along the Chobe River. It handles domestic and some regional flights and is small and easy to use.

Most lodges include or arrange airport transfers for their guests, which is the simplest way to arrive. Taxis are available, and car hire can be arranged in advance, although most visitors explore the park on organised game drives and cruises.

Accommodation is concentrated along the river, from campsites to luxury lodges.

  • Kasane riverfront — Lodges overlooking the Chobe River, close to the park gate; ideal for most visitors.
  • Kazungula — East of Kasane near the borders, convenient for trips to Victoria Falls.
  • Inside Chobe National Park — Lodges and camps within the park for immersive wildlife stays.

  • Money: Lodges accept cards, but carry pula or US dollars in small notes for tips and local purchases.
  • Wildlife: Elephants and other animals wander through town, so be cautious walking, especially at night.
  • Health: Malaria is present, so seek medical advice before travel and use repellent at dusk.
  • Border trips: Visiting Victoria Falls involves crossing a border, so allow time and carry your passport.
  • Sun and heat: Wear a hat and sunscreen on game drives and cruises, and stay hydrated.
