Blantyre Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Blantyre is Malawi’s commercial capital and oldest urban centre, set among the green hills of the Shire Highlands in the south of the country. Named after the Scottish birthplace of David Livingstone, it offers colonial-era heritage, a lively market scene and easy access to tea estates, mountains and wildlife reserves. Blantyre mixes history and city life with superb highland scenery close by.

  • St Michael and All Angels Church — A striking red-brick church built by Scottish missionaries in the late nineteenth century, still in use today.
  • Mandala House — Malawi’s oldest building, a colonial-era trading house now home to an art gallery and café.
  • Museum of Malawi — Exhibits on the country’s history, cultures and traditional Gule Wamkulu masks.
  • Mulanje Massif — A dramatic granite massif south-east of the city, with hiking trails, waterfalls and mountain huts.
  • Thyolo tea estates — Rolling plantations south of Blantyre where you can see how Malawian tea is grown and processed.
  • Majete Wildlife Reserve — A restored reserve in the Shire Valley that is home to the Big Five.
  • Zomba Plateau — A forested plateau north of Blantyre with viewpoints, streams and walking trails.

Blantyre’s altitude gives it a pleasant, temperate climate. The rainy season runs from about November to April, with warm, humid days and heavy afternoon storms. The cool, dry season from May to August brings sunny days and chilly nights, while September and October are warmer and drier still.

May to October is the best time to visit, with clear skies for hiking on Mulanje and Zomba and the best game viewing in Majete as vegetation thins. The green season is lovely for photography and birdwatching but some roads become difficult after heavy rain.

Chileka International Airport lies north of Blantyre, roughly half an hour’s drive from the city centre. It handles domestic and regional flights and has a small, easy-to-navigate terminal.

Taxis are available outside the terminal, and many hotels arrange airport transfers if booked ahead, which is often the most convenient choice. Car hire with or without a driver can be organised for trips to Mulanje, Zomba or the wildlife reserves.

Blantyre and neighbouring Limbe form one long urban area along the main road.

  • City centre — Close to banks, shops and restaurants; convenient for business travellers.
  • Sunnyside and Mount Pleasant — Leafy residential areas with guesthouses and quieter surroundings.
  • Namiwawa — A residential district with lodges, suitable for longer stays.
  • Mulanje and Thyolo — Lodges on tea estates or near the mountain for nature lovers.

  • Money: Carry kwacha in cash for markets and taxis; cards are accepted mainly in larger hotels and supermarkets.
  • Getting around: Use taxis recommended by your hotel and agree fares before setting off.
  • Etiquette: Malawi is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa”; greet people warmly and dress modestly outside hotels.
  • Health: Malaria is present, so seek medical advice before travel and use repellent and nets.
  • Safety: Avoid walking alone after dark and keep valuables out of sight in busy areas.
