Livingstone Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Livingstone lies in southern Zambia, just a few kilometres from Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, the border with Zimbabwe. Known as Zambia’s adventure capital, it combines the spectacle of Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders’, with river cruises, wildlife and adrenaline activities. Book flights to Livingstone with RwandAir and partner airlines.

Victoria Falls is the star attraction, but Livingstone offers plenty more on and around the Zambezi.

  • Victoria Falls — Walk the trails on the Zambian side for close-up views of one of the world’s largest waterfalls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Zambezi sunset cruise — Drift along the upper river spotting hippos, crocodiles, elephants and birdlife.
  • White-water rafting — Tackle famous rapids in the Batoka Gorge below the falls, best when water levels are lower.
  • Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park — A small park by the river, known for guided walks to see white rhino.
  • Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island — Guided visits to the edge of the falls, possible only in the low-water season.
  • Victoria Falls Bridge — The historic bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe, with bungee jumping and gorge swings.
  • Livingstone Museum — Zambia’s oldest museum, covering history, archaeology and David Livingstone’s travels.

Livingstone has a rainy season from about November to March and a dry season from April or May to October. The falls are at their most powerful from around February to May, after the rains, when the spray is so heavy that it can obscure the view and soak visitors.

The dry season from May to October is the most popular time, with sunny days, cooler mornings and good wildlife viewing. From around August to December, water levels drop, revealing the rock face and making activities like rafting and Devil’s Pool possible, although October and November can be very hot.

Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport lies only a few kilometres north-west of Livingstone town centre, and a short drive from Victoria Falls and the riverside lodges.

Taxis are available outside the terminal, but most lodges and hotels offer airport transfers, which are easy to arrange when booking. Tour operators often include pick-ups with activities. The journey to town is short, and the drive to the falls or riverside lodges along the Zambezi usually takes only a little longer.

Choose between the town itself and the lodges strung along the Zambezi upstream of the falls.

  • Town centre — Close to restaurants, shops and the museum; good for independent travellers and budget stays.
  • Near the falls — Hotels within walking distance of Victoria Falls, ideal for early morning visits.
  • Zambezi riverside — Lodges and camps along the river, perfect for sunsets, wildlife and a relaxed stay.

  • Money: Carry some kwacha for small purchases; many activities and lodges accept cards, and cash machines are available in town.
  • Getting around: Taxis and lodge transfers are the easiest way to get around; walking at night is not advised because of wildlife.
  • Wildlife safety: Elephants and hippos roam near the river and town, so keep your distance and follow guides’ instructions.
  • Health: Use insect repellent and seek medical advice about malaria prevention before travelling.
  • At the falls: Bring a waterproof jacket and protect your phone or camera from the spray, especially in high-water months.
