Abha Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Abha is the capital of the Asir region in south-western Saudi Arabia, set high in the Sarawat Mountains. Its cool climate, misty peaks, terraced hillsides and colourful stone-and-mud villages make it a favourite summer escape, with a rich tradition of Asiri art and architecture. Book flights to Abha with RwandAir and partner airlines.

Abha’s highlights are its mountain landscapes and the distinctive heritage of the Asir region.

  • Rijal Almaa — Visit this striking heritage village of multi-storey stone houses in a valley west of Abha, with a local museum.
  • Al Soudah — Enjoy cool air and sweeping views from one of the highest areas in Saudi Arabia, reached by road or cable car.
  • Asir National Park — Explore juniper forests, viewpoints and picnic areas in the surrounding highlands.
  • Al Muftaha Village — Discover this arts district in central Abha, with galleries and traditional Asiri decoration.
  • Habala — See the dramatic cliffside village, historically reached by rope, now accessed by cable car when operating.
  • Shada Palace — Visit this historic mud-brick building, now a museum of local heritage.
  • Asiri cuisine — Try local dishes such as areekah and honey from the mountain region.

Thanks to its altitude of more than 2,000 metres, Abha is much cooler than most of Saudi Arabia. Summer, from June to September, is the peak season, with mild days that attract visitors escaping the heat elsewhere in the Gulf; afternoon fog and summer rains are common.

Spring and autumn are also pleasant for walking and sightseeing, with clear views and fewer crowds. Winter days are mild but nights can be cold, especially in the higher areas around Al Soudah. During Ramadan, opening hours change and many restaurants open only after sunset.

Abha International Airport is located between Abha and the neighbouring city of Khamis Mushait, generally a drive of around 20 to 30 minutes to central Abha.

There is no rail link. Travellers usually use airport taxis, ride-hailing apps such as Uber or Careem, or hire cars, which are useful for exploring the mountains. Many hotels can also arrange transfers. Roads in the region can be steep and winding, so drive carefully, particularly in fog.

Abha’s accommodation ranges from city hotels to mountain resorts and chalets.

  • Central Abha — Convenient for Al Muftaha, restaurants and the city’s parks.
  • Al Soudah and the highlands — Ideal for cooler temperatures, nature and mountain views.
  • Near Abha Dam and the lake — A relaxed setting with walking paths and scenic views.
  • Khamis Mushait — Suits business travellers and those wanting a wider choice of shopping.

  • Money: Cards and mobile payments are widely accepted; carry some riyals for small shops and markets.
  • Getting around: A hire car is the most flexible way to explore the region; ride-hailing apps work well in the city.
  • Dress: Dress modestly in public, covering shoulders and knees, and bring a warm layer for cool evenings.
  • Weather: Mountain fog can reduce visibility quickly, so allow extra time on the roads.
  • Etiquette: Ask before photographing people, and respect prayer times, when some shops close briefly.
