Aqaba Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Aqaba is Jordan’s only coastal city, on the northern tip of the Red Sea’s Gulf of Aqaba in the far south of the country. Warm water, colourful coral reefs and year-round sunshine make it a relaxed beach and diving base, with the desert landscapes of Wadi Rum and the ancient city of Petra within easy reach. Book flights to Aqaba with RwandAir and partner airlines.

Top things to do in Aqaba

Aqaba combines Red Sea activities with history and access to Jordan’s most famous desert sights.

  • Snorkelling and diving — Explore coral reefs, colourful fish and wrecks along the coast south of the city, including the Aqaba Marine Park.
  • Japanese Garden reef — A popular dive and snorkel site known for its soft corals.
  • Aqaba Fort — A historic fortress near the seafront, linked to the Great Arab Revolt.
  • Aqaba Flagpole — A giant flagpole on the waterfront, visible from far across the gulf.
  • Glass-bottom boat trips — An easy way to see the reefs without getting wet, ideal for families.
  • Wadi Rum — The dramatic desert valley of red sand and sandstone mountains, about an hour’s drive north-east.
  • Petra — The UNESCO-listed rose-red city carved into rock, around two hours’ drive north.

Best time to visit Aqaba

Aqaba has a hot desert climate with sunshine almost every day. October to April is the most pleasant time to visit, with warm days, comfortable evenings and calm, clear water ideal for diving and snorkelling. This is also the best season for excursions to Wadi Rum and Petra, where midday heat is less intense.

From May to September temperatures rise very high, though sea breezes and the warm water make Aqaba popular for beach holidays. Winter nights can be cool, especially in the desert, so pack a warm layer for Wadi Rum. During Ramadan, opening hours and dining options may change.

Getting from the airport

King Hussein International Airport lies about 10 km north of Aqaba’s city centre, and the drive into town usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes.

Taxis are available outside the terminal; it is a good idea to confirm the fare before departing. Many hotels and resorts arrange transfers for their guests, which is convenient, especially for resorts along the south coast and at Tala Bay. Car hire is available for travellers planning to drive to Wadi Rum, Petra or the Dead Sea, and tour operators offer organised excursions from Aqaba.

Where to stay

Aqaba offers city hotels and beach resorts along the coast.

  • City centre and seafront — Hotels near restaurants, shops and the fort; convenient for exploring on foot.
  • Ayla — A newer waterfront development with marinas, a golf course and modern hotels.
  • South Beach — Close to the best reefs and dive centres; ideal for divers and snorkellers.
  • Tala Bay — A resort area with beaches and pools further south; suits families and relaxing holidays.

Travel tips
