Banjul Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Banjul is the capital of The Gambia, set on an island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its small, laid-back centre sits next to sunny resort beaches, excellent birdwatching and historic river sites, making it a welcoming introduction to the country known as the Smiling Coast of Africa. Top things to do in Banjul

Banjul and the nearby coast combine history, nature and beach life.

  • Arch 22 — A monumental gateway at the entrance to the capital, with a museum and views over the city.
  • Albert Market — A lively market selling fabrics, crafts, spices and fresh produce.
  • National Museum — Displays on Gambian history, culture and traditional life.
  • Kachikally Crocodile Pool — A sacred pool in Bakau, home to many crocodiles and a small museum.
  • Abuko Nature Reserve — A small forest reserve rich in birds and monkeys, close to the coast.
  • Kunta Kinteh Island — A UNESCO-listed island in the Gambia River linked to the history of the Atlantic slave trade, reached by boat.
  • Atlantic beaches — Golden sands at Kololi, Kotu and Cape Point, with hotels, restaurants and fishing villages such as Tanji nearby.

Best time to visit Banjul

Banjul has a tropical climate with a long dry season and a short rainy season. November to May is the best time to visit, with sunny days, low humidity and pleasant sea breezes, making it ideal for beaches, birdwatching and river excursions. This is also the main holiday season, especially from December to February.

The rainy season runs from about June to October, with hot, humid weather and heavy showers, often in the afternoon or evening. The landscape becomes green and birdlife is abundant, and there are fewer visitors. Temperatures are warm all year, so pack light clothing and sun protection.

Getting from the airport

Banjul International Airport is at Yundum, about 25 km from central Banjul and closer to the coastal resort areas of Kololi, Kotu and Bakau. The drive to the resorts usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes, and to Banjul itself a little longer, depending on traffic.

Official taxis wait outside the terminal; agree the fare before departing. Many hotels and tour operators arrange airport transfers, which is the easiest option, especially for package holidays. Public minibuses also run along main roads but are less convenient with luggage.

Where to stay

Most visitors stay in the coastal resort areas rather than in Banjul itself.

  • Kololi and the Senegambia area — Hotels, restaurants and nightlife near the beach; ideal for holidaymakers.
  • Kotu — Beach hotels and good birdwatching near Kotu Stream; suits relaxed stays.
  • Bakau and Cape Point — Quieter hotels by the sea, close to the crocodile pool and fishing beach.
  • Banjul — A few hotels close to government offices and the port; convenient for business.

Travel tips

  • Money: Cash in dalasi is widely used; cards work in larger hotels and some restaurants, and ATMs are found in resort areas.
  • Getting around: Use official taxis and agree fares in advance; hotels can arrange drivers for excursions.
  • Beach hustle: Friendly but persistent offers of guiding or trading are common on beaches; a polite, firm “no thank you” works.
  • Health: Seek medical advice before travel on vaccinations and malaria prevention, and drink bottled water.
  • Language: English is the official language and widely spoken; a greeting in Wolof or Mandinka is always appreciated.
