Najaf Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Najaf, in central Iraq on the edge of the desert south of Baghdad, is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam and a centre of religious scholarship. Millions of pilgrims come each year to visit the golden-domed Imam Ali Shrine, explore the old city souqs and travel on to nearby Kufa and Karbala. Book flights to Najaf with RwandAir and partner airlines.

Top things to do in Najaf

Most visits to Najaf centre on pilgrimage, with deeply significant religious sites in and around the city.

  • Imam Ali Shrine — The resting place of Imam Ali, crowned by a golden dome and surrounded by vast courtyards; the spiritual heart of the city.
  • Wadi al-Salam — One of the largest cemeteries in the world, stretching across a huge area beside the old city.
  • Old City souqs — Markets around the shrine selling prayer beads, textiles, books, perfumes and sweets.
  • Great Mosque of Kufa — One of the oldest mosques in Islam, in the neighbouring city of Kufa.
  • House of Imam Ali, Kufa — The modest dwelling traditionally associated with Imam Ali, near the Kufa mosque.
  • Al-Sahla Mosque — A historic mosque in Kufa that is an important stop for many pilgrims.
  • Karbala — The holy city of Karbala, with the shrines of Imam Hussein and Abbas, lies roughly 80 km to the north.

Best time to visit Najaf

Najaf has a hot desert climate. The cooler months, from November to March, are the most comfortable for visiting, with mild, sunny days and cool nights; occasional rain falls in winter. Summers, from about May to September, are extremely hot, often exceeding 45°C, so time spent outdoors should be limited to the early morning and evening.

Religious occasions bring huge crowds. The Arbaeen pilgrimage, when many pilgrims walk from Najaf to Karbala, is one of the largest annual gatherings in the world. Its dates follow the Islamic lunar calendar, so they shift each year; book accommodation well in advance if travelling at this time.

Getting from the airport

Al Najaf International Airport lies a short drive from the city, between Najaf and Kufa. The journey to the area around the shrine is usually quick, although checkpoints and pilgrimage traffic can cause delays.

Taxis are available at the airport, and many hotels and pilgrimage organisers arrange transfers, which is the easiest option for first-time visitors. Agree taxi fares before setting off. During major religious events, roads near the shrine may be closed to vehicles.

Where to stay

Most accommodation is geared to pilgrims and clusters around the shrine.

  • Old City around the shrine — Hotels within walking distance of the Imam Ali Shrine, ideal for pilgrims.
  • Main roads towards Kufa — Newer, larger hotels with easier road access and parking.
  • Kufa — A quieter base close to the Great Mosque of Kufa and other historic sites.
