Famous for its frankincense heritage and summer monsoon, the khareef, which turns the hills green and misty, it offers beaches, waterfalls, ancient ruins and fragrant souqs. Top things to do in Salalah

Salalah blends ancient trade history with lush landscapes that are unique in the Arabian Peninsula.

  • Al Baleed Archaeological Park — Ruins of a medieval trading port, part of the UNESCO-listed Land of Frankincense, with the Museum of the Frankincense Land on site.
  • Sumhuram (Khor Rori) — An ancient port city overlooking a lagoon, also part of the UNESCO listing.
  • Wadi Darbat — A green valley with a lake and seasonal waterfalls, at its best during and after the khareef.
  • Mughsail Beach — A long beach west of the city, known for its natural blowholes that spray seawater through the rocks.
  • Al Haffa Souq — A traditional market selling frankincense, incense burners, perfumes and local crafts.
  • Ain Razat and Ain Athum — Natural springs in the foothills, popular for picnics and short walks.
  • Taqah and Mirbat — Historic coastal towns east of Salalah with forts and old houses.

Best time to visit Salalah

Salalah has two distinct appeals. From about late June to September, the khareef monsoon brings cool temperatures, drizzle and mist, turning the mountains and wadis green; this is peak season for visitors from across the Gulf, and the city hosts a popular annual khareef festival with events and markets.

From October to April, skies are generally clear and sunny with warm days, ideal for beaches, swimming and exploring archaeological sites; the landscape is drier and browner. April and May can be hot and humid. Book early for the khareef period, as demand for accommodation is high.

Getting from the airport

Salalah International Airport is located close to the city, just a few kilometres from the centre and the main hotel areas, so transfers are short.

Taxis are available outside the terminal, and ride-hailing apps operate in Oman, though availability can vary. Many hotels and resorts arrange transfers. Car hire desks are at the airport, and renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Dhofar’s scattered sights.

Where to stay

Choose between city convenience and beachfront resorts along the coast.

  • Central Salalah and Al Haffa — Close to souqs, restaurants and Al Baleed, suiting short stays and independent travellers.
  • Al Baleed beachfront — Resorts near the archaeological park, ideal for couples and families.
  • Hawana Salalah — A resort area on the coast east of the city, with pools and beaches.
  • Taqah and Mirbat — Quieter coastal towns for a more relaxed pace.
