Lomé Travel Guide: Things to Do & Best Time to Visit

Lomé is the capital of Togo, stretched along the Gulf of Guinea right beside the border with Ghana. A relaxed coastal city of palm-lined boulevards, bustling markets and a growing arts scene, it is also the starting point for trips to Lake Togo and the green hills around Kpalimé. Lomé blends coastal life with vibrant markets and rich Ewe culture.

  • Grand Marché — The huge central market, packed with fabrics, food and household goods, famous for its formidable market women.
  • Akodésséwa fetish market — A market of traditional Vodun remedies and charms, offering insight into local spiritual practices.
  • Palais de Lomé — The former colonial governor’s palace, restored as an art and cultural centre set in a large park.
  • Independence Monument — A landmark in the city centre commemorating Togo’s independence in 1960.
  • Sacred Heart Cathedral — A German colonial-era cathedral with distinctive Gothic-style towers, near the Grand Marché.
  • Lake Togo and Togoville — Cross the lagoon by pirogue to the historic village of Togoville, a short drive east of the city.
  • Beaches — Walk the long sandy coastline along the seafront boulevard, especially at sunset.

Lomé has a tropical climate with high humidity all year. The south of Togo has two rainy seasons, a main one from about April to July and a shorter one around September to October. The dry season from November to March is sunnier, though the harmattan wind can bring dusty, hazy skies between December and February.

November to February is generally the most pleasant time to visit, with less rain and comfortable evenings. It is also a good period for excursions inland to Kpalimé’s hills and waterfalls, when roads are easier and the countryside is still green after the rains.

Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, also known as Lomé–Tokoin, lies only a few kilometres north-east of the city centre. It has a modern terminal and is an important regional hub.

Taxis are available outside arrivals; agree the fare before setting off or ask your hotel to arrange a pick-up, which is the most straightforward option on a first visit. Journey times into the centre are usually short, though traffic can build at peak times.

Most hotels are in the centre, along the coast or near the airport.

  • City centre — Close to the Grand Marché, cathedral and banks; convenient for sightseeing and business.
  • Seafront boulevard — Hotels facing the ocean, popular for sea views and evening walks.
  • Tokoin — A large district near the airport with hotels and local restaurants.
  • Baguida and Avépozo — Coastal areas east of the city with beach hotels and a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Money: Carry CFA francs in cash for markets and taxis; cards are accepted mainly in larger hotels and supermarkets.
  • Getting around: Motorbike taxis (zémidjans) are common but carry risks; cars and pre-arranged taxis are safer.
  • Beach safety: The Atlantic has strong currents and powerful waves, so avoid swimming at unsupervised beaches.
  • Health: Malaria is present, so seek medical advice before travel and use insect repellent.
  • Etiquette: Ask permission before photographing people, especially at markets and religious sites.
